Baseball is Cruel

How much more of this are we expected to take?

Everything was going great. Schilling pitched into the 7th, and he pitched very well, leaving the bullpen only 2 measly innings of work. Ortiz hit another home run, we were up 5-3 after 7, nothing really seemed to be going wrong.

And then Mike Timlin happened.

He walked someone to load the bases with NO OUTS in the EIGHTH inning. Always the 8th inning. Papelbon had to come in to try to get out of it unscathed, and of course he couldn't. A sac fly got a run in but he did manage to get 2 strikeouts after it. It was 5-4 at the end of the 8th.

Jeter hit a pathetic bloop single to tie the game in the 9th, after Damon and Bernie both struck out. Jeter was supposed to be the final out of the game, but no, he had to hit a stupid bloop shot to score some fool. I hate cheap hits like that.

Our half of the 9th was the worst part of the game. Ortiz got to second on a Giambi screw up. Manny was intentionally walked. Then came the bad. Youkilis tried to bunt but Ortiz was out at third. Mike Lowell walked, so the bases were loaded with ONE out. Hinske brought nothing but bad with a strikeout, then Mirabelli swung at the freaking first pitch and grounded it right back to Rivera. So to extra innings we went. Papelbon looked really upset, and I imagine that was because the offense had a great chance to get him out of a jam when he had gotten them out so many before, and they failed him.

When I asked Craig Hansen what would happen if Giambi hit a home run, I really didn't want to know the answer. Posada hit a 2-run shot...and I can't believe the bullpen blew it again. Schilling pitched 7 innings, they only had to get through TWO!! I feel pretty bad for Curt right about now. I started crying right after Posada hit that HR...yeah, that's pretty bad, but what can I say. I love this team too much to watch them go down and not care.

Still plenty of time! They can still make the post season...and they will.
