Not This Time
It looks like the thing with Javy Lopez is going to happen. The Globe is anticipating the loss of Adam Stern, Alejandro Machado, or Abe Alvarez. I guess I can accept this, but I do feel bad for Huckaby, who has been designated for assignment.
Youkilis started it off yesterday with a double, and Manny sent him home with his 1,500th RBI.
Beckett gave up a solo shot in the 3rd. That's to be expected when he pitches. In the 4th, Gonzalez turned a pretty double play: He had to cover for Loretta at 2nd and then he made a crazy good throw to Youk. The Gonz is really, really making me happy lately. It was also the #1 Web Gem!
Huckaby wasted no time in getting his first hit, and he played his position quite well last night. Still, it was clear that Beckett needed Varitek later on..
Another home run in the 6th allowed by Beckett tied the game. Man, he really has to stop with the HRs. That's 31 he's allowed this year, and yes, that leads the league. Not exactly the race you want to be winning.
Still the 6th, and still bad news. 3 singles after the HR and no outs later, the bases were loaded and we needed a double play badly.
Didn't get it. But Cleveland did get a grand slam. It was very hard to watch. Especially since 2 batters before I was telling Francona to take Beckett out. Apparently, he did not get the message.
Poor Beckett was booed. And he threw just about everything around him in the dugout.
Bases were loaded for the Sox in the 6th too, but Huckaby GIDP and we only got one run out of it. Youk got an RBI right after, so it was 7-5 and close again.
Kyle Snyder replaced Beckett but didn't really do much of anything. Oh, except load the bases with one out. Craig Hansen came in and took care of business; he got a double play that, once again, Gonzalez handled amazingly. He got it to Loretta who got it to Youk JUST in time for the out. This defense is exceptional, thanks in large part to Alex Gonzalez, whom I'm pretty sure I'm in love with.
The 9th inning was a sad affair. The worst part was I couldn't even get excited about it, because I had this feeling that they were going to lose, with no 9th inning heroics to come. When they were down by 2 going into the 9th a few days ago and won, I was nervous as hell because I thought they were going to win, but last night there was nothing but depression going on. Down by a game to the Yankees. Hurts just to think about it.
